PR calls for more attention to Justice in Portugal

The president of the republic this Sunday said it was “a pity” that “great attention” is not being paid to the judicial sector in Portugal, arguing that the war in Ukraine and the economic and social crises would justify a different attitude.

“While the economic crisis, inflation, war and social problems have put Justice in a very bleak position in the minds of the Portuguese, it is unfortunate that, with a constitutional review process underway and with changes in the laws to come, have to do with justice, don’t care – was the big conclusion of this congress – a lot of attention for justice at the moment in Portugal”, emphasized Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The head of state spoke to journalists outside the Madeira Congress Center, in Funchal, after taking part in the closing session of the XII Congress of Portuguese Judges.

Referring to the fact that in 2016/2017 he tried to initiate a reform of the Portuguese judiciary, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that “this time may be a greater sensitivity”.

“Crises, war, do not imply less attention to justice, they imply more attention”, strengthens.

The president of the republic pointed out that since politicians “have to solve social problems every day, for example related to inflation, health or the lack of housing, this puts justice in fifth place, sixth in seventh place” .

“Now, why is justice so important? Because there is a problem that relates to the economic and financial crisis, the courts have to decide. If there is a problem that concerns fundamental questions, for example, the courts have to decide,” he argued. .

“So there are problems that result from the situation in the world and the crisis that this situation is causing in Portugal, inflation being an example, that will go to court. If they go to court, it means that it worth pitying justice,” insisted Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

Asked, on the other hand, if he considers that there is mistrust among the citizens regarding that area, the President of the Republic was imperative: “I don’t think there is any mistrust of the judiciary, they are very demanding, increasingly demanding, and of course that means that the judiciary has more resources to correspond.”
