PS: Cavaco Silva reveals “oversight” and “destructive spirit”

The deputy secretary general of the PS, João Torres, this Saturday accused the former president of the republic Cavaco Silva of being inattentive to the government’s housing measures and of continuing to use a “destructive spirit” in relation to the executive.

“I think that with the statements he made this Saturday, Professor Cavaco Silva shows a profound disdain for the strategy of the government and the series of measures announced some time ago, many of which are still in public debate “, told Lusa João Torres.

The number two of the PS responded on Saturday to the statements of the also former social-democratic prime minister for the housing sector and his conclusion that the crisis in this domain “is the result of the failure of the government’s policies”, expressing “many doubts” about the success of the executive’s package, which he said had a “credibility problem”.

“We have become accustomed in recent years to almost always listen to Professor Cavaco Silva with a destructive spirit in relation to the government and in relation to the PS, and this Saturday was no exception,” thought of Joao Torres.

According to the former Secretary of State for Trade, Services and Consumer Protection, “a more constructive attitude would be expected from a former head of state”.

João Torres also “vehemently” rejected the criticism that the housing crisis is the fault of the PS government, saying that “there are several factors, many of them of a complex nature, that explain the moment we are going through from a cost point of view. access to housing”.

João Torres said Cavaco Silva’s “profound oversight” is exposed by not pointing out, for example, that “230 local housing strategies are currently being implemented in the country, devised in collaboration with the municipalities”.

“There is no form of ideological bias on the part of the measures presented by the government,” added the head of the PS, as “a large part of the incentives and tax breaks are aimed precisely at owners and landlords”.

Cavaco Silva spoke this Saturday at the conference marking the 30th anniversary of the Special Rehousing Program (PER), an initiative of the Lisbon City Council, which was also attended by PSD President Luís Montenegro, who considered that “justified and well-founded” the criticism of Cavaco Silva.

“We have warned the government about this option to bring everything that is not intended, namely confidence, stability, predictability and the ability to implement a real program that will increase housing supply in Portugal,” the leader of the PSD.

The PS number two told Lusa that Montenegro’s criticism is “absolutely unfounded”, and that the government’s measures are based “on the confidence that must be instilled in all agents in the sector”.
