Emmanuel Macron shows his support for his prime minister. A guest on TF1 and France 2 this Wednesday, the President of the Republic assured that Elisabeth Borne still had her confidence after difficult weeks for the government, in the context of a highly disputed pension reform.
“I have appointed Elisabeth Borne, so she must have the confidence of Parliament,” he said.
He recalled that the Prime Minister had decided to compromise the Government’s responsibility in the pension reform using 49.3, a constitutional tool that allows a law to be approved without a vote by the deputies, so that the pension reform “passes” and “that there is no uncertainty” about its adoption. The government only has a relative majority in the National Assembly and ran the risk of seeing its text rejected.
Terminal will have to “zoom” most
“She said in Parliament: ‘if you have an alternative majority, let it speak,'” Macron continued. “On Monday it was shown that there was no alternative majority.” In fact, two motions of censure were rejected, one of them with nine votes.
The President of the Government “has my confidence to lead this government team”, the head of state also declared this Wednesday.
He said he hoped Elisabeth Borne would be able to “build a government agenda” and “broaden” the majority “in the coming weeks.” The president also said that he wanted “less legal texts” and “shorter and clearer texts.”
