Marcelo invites Dominican counterpart to visit and expects digital collaboration

The head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, announced this Thursday that he had invited the Dominican president, Luis Abinader, to visit Portugal at the time of the Web Summit and said he expected a strengthening of bilateral cooperation in the digital sector.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke in Santo Domingo, at the National Palace, after meeting his Dominican counterpart, Luis Abinader, at the start of his one-day official visit to the Dominican Republic, which he said was the first by a Portuguese President .

“I have invited President Abinader to Lisbon later this year, probably at the time of the Web Summit, the digital summit that will take place in November. We want him with us. We want to empower the Dominican Republic with us in the digital revolution “he declared.

With Luis Abinader at his side, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke about this “it is the first visit of a Portuguese president to the Dominican Republic” and added that “his visit in November will be the first visit by a Dominican president to Portugal”.

That was the opinion of the Portuguese head of state “the agreements signed today will rapidly enable the expansion of bilateral cooperation between the Dominican Republic and Portugal”.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa referred to the Cooperation Agreement between the two countries and a Memorandum of Understanding on Higher Education and Artificial Intelligence signed by the Portuguese Foreign Minister, João Gomes Cravinho, and by the Dominican Foreign Minister, Roberto Alvarez.

Before the statements to the media, without the right to ask questions, the Portuguese and Dominican heads of state exchanged awards.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa awarded Luis Abinader the Grand Collar Order of Infante D. Henrique and was awarded the Grand Cross Gold Plate of the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sánchez and Mella by his counterpart.

This official visit precedes the 28th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, which will take place from Friday to Saturday in Santo Domingo, under the motto “Together for a fair and sustainable Ibero-America”, where Portugal will be represented by the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, António Costa.
