A report hailed by the left. The state visit to France of Charles III, scheduled to start on Sunday, is cancelled, the Elysee announced on Friday. The announcement provoked a lot of reactions, especially on the left, but also on the extreme right. Everyone welcomes this decision, in the midst of a social movement against the pension reform.
The leader of La France insoumise, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, was delighted to see “the meeting of the kings in Versailles dispersed by popular censorship”, on Twitter. A direct reference to the dinner scheduled for Monday night in Versailles between Carlos III and Emmanuel Macron.
Others like him wove the real metaphor. The deputy Nupes Clémentine Autain assures that “the monarchy wavers” after this announcement, pointing to the French head of state.
“Two kings were going to meet in Versailles. 1 down, 1 to go” (Two kings were going to meet in Versailles. One is on the ground, the other soon), the deputy Nupes Raquel Garrido advances.
Deputy Manuel Bompard, for his part, wants to see it as a sign of the fragility of Emmanuel Macron at the helm of the State. “Charles III has backed down, Macron will back down”, he hopes.
“Can Macron receive the inter-union now?”
Several figures on the left took advantage of this announcement to launch a new attack on the President of the Republic, referring to Emmanuel Macron’s refusal to receive the unions on pensions again.
“Like what, Emmanuel Macron has found the opposite”, laughs the national secretary of the PCF on Twitter.
“Since he no longer receives the King of England, Charles III, can Macron now receive the inter-union?”, says the deputy Nupes Alexis Corbière.
“It was lunar to make this visit in the midst of social conflict”
Green MP Sandrine Rousseau, who had called for the cancellation of this visit, welcomed this decision on BFMTV. “It’s good that it has been postponed, it was lunar to make this visit in the midst of a social conflict of historic proportions,” she said.
“Going to eat at Versailles, going down to the Champs-Élysées… Nothing was going well,” she says, while stressing that it is, according to her, “more important to listen to the protesters than to roll out the red carpet for the king.”
The state visit of Carlos III was to begin on Sunday and end on Wednesday. The new date of his visit to France is still unknown.
