Marcelo dismisses being angry or trampling on Costa’s powers

The president of the republic said on Sunday that “there has never been any personal anger” at the prime minister and ruled out that he had flouted the government’s constitutional powers.

“I think there has never been any personal anger. You know those who observe political realities, observe the scum of the days and the surface of things, often don’t realize that the role of each of us is different,” argued Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa addresses journalists at the end of a meeting with the Portuguese community in Luxembourg.

The President of the Republic also ruled out violating the prime minister’s constitutional powers with comments he made recently: “And vice versa, I also did not think that the Assembly [da República]the government or the prime minister has trampled on the powers of other sovereign bodies, or whether any of us have trampled on the powers of the courts.”

“However, it is clear that there are differences” that are “natural”, but “have nothing to do with personal problems,” assured Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

During the call for registration of the Portuguese living in Luxembourg for the local elections, the Portuguese head of state made a joking assessment of António Costa’s political future: “I’m not getting any more votes on Earth, let’s see if I get a few more in Heaven. You never know, Prime Minister.”

When asked about these statements, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa recalled that António Costa is “much younger, he is 13 years younger” than the president of the republic.

“I don’t know what the prime minister, who is so young, has a political future, which is to run for election, it’s done,” he added.

Regarding the family support package presented last week, the President of the Republic believed it comes “at a time when it was known that there was money for it – the deficit actually allows it – and, at the on the other hand, also in which there is the idea that inflation is not falling and that the Portuguese and their families are suffering”.
