Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday called on the government “to move hard” to speed up the issuance of identity documents as waiting times begin to increase again ahead of the summer.
“The President of the Republic, during the Council of Ministers, asked the government to mobilize more forcefully and underlined the need to move from an obligation of means to an obligation of results,” said executive spokesman Olivier Véran.
“Delays increase again”
“We want to offer a guarantee for the French that they will have their identity documents in due time,” he stressed, specifying that the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, had presented a communication on the subject during the Council of Ministers.
According to Olivier Véran, requests for identity documents accelerated in 2022 due to a “post-Covid-19 catch-up”, increasing waiting times from 30 to 90 days last May before the summer holidays, before diminishing in about thirty days.
Despite the measures taken by the government, “delays are increasing again, in particular due to an acceleration of applications”, explained Olivier Véran.
To respond to this, “the Government continues to deploy additional resources for the steps that our fellow citizens will take before the summer,” he added.
