Chega’s leader announced this Friday that former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini will be in Lisbon in May for a party-organized meeting with far-right figures from several countries.
In a video message sent to the editors, André Ventura assured that Bolsonaro and Salvini have already confirmed their presence in Lisbon “for the great event of the right-wing world” that Chega is organizing and that will take place on May 13 and 14.
“Bolsonaro will arrive in Lisbon on the 12th and depart on the 15th, according to an official message received by Chega yesterday”the party said in a letter to journalists.
In the video, Ventura argues that this event will “put Lisbon at the center of the world’s right.”
“The presence of Jair Bolsonaro, Matteo Salvini and many other leaders of the European right marks Lisbon as one of the new centers of the strongest right in Europe and one of the world references in the fight against socialism,” he said.
Chega’s leader called for participation in the event, praising the party’s “recognition from international colleagues”.
On March 23, André Ventura confirmed that he was organizing a “massive event” to bring together leaders of the far right in Europe in Lisbon, as well as former presidents of Brazil and the United States, Jair Bolsonaro and Donald Trump.
At a press conference in Lisbon, André Ventura indicated that the party also invited “several leaders from the European right”, including Santiago Abascal, of Spain’s Vox, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who “dearly welcomes Chega in Portugal”.
The purpose of this event, he said at the time, is similar to the Political Action Conference of Conservatives (CPAC), which is considered the most important gathering of the ultra-conservative movement in the United States of America.
“The idea was to closely resemble the North American CPAC”with interventions, conferences, moments of interaction and “sometimes meetings with more popular leaders or with more mobilization,” he said.
Matteo Salvini was already present in 2021 at a congress of Chega that took place in Coimbra.
