Marcelo rules out the possibility of dissolving Parliament

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa this Monday ruled out the possibility of dissolving Parliament, taking into account the most recent cases involving the government, namely regarding TAP. Nevertheless, the President of the Republic leaves some messages to the executive of António Costa, but also to the opposition, admitting that he is not being held hostage by anyone.

“The issue is very simple: the president is not in the pocket of the opposition or the government, he is in his pocket. It makes no sense to talk about dissolution every two months. It makes sense that the opposition appears as an alternative in the eyes of the Portuguese and the government to govern well so as not to throw away the benefits of having a majority,” he warned.

“It is the function of the president to be attentive, independent in his judgment, looking at the well-being of the country at a given moment,” he explained after the inauguration of the interpretive center in honor of soldier Milhões, hero of the First World War, in Valongo de Milhais, municipality of Murça.

Marcelo also recalled that “it is legitimate to ask the government to do its best to govern”.

The head of state again denied that he had asked in his favor to postpone a TAP flight: “That idea never occurred to me, it would be stupid and selfish. Only a very stupid politician would sacrifice 200 people.”
