The BE coordinator today accused the prime minister of never showing up when it was time to take on responsibilities or pretending not to know, ruling out the possibility of going forward at this point with a motion of disapproval.
“We actually have a prime minister with a lot of explaining to the country, who likes to show up when he makes announcements, but then never shows up when it’s time to take on responsibilities or pretend not to know”said Catarina Martins during a visit to the historic part of Castelo Branco, because of the housing policy.
The BE leader also recorded the words spoken today by the President of the Republic.
“He said [Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa] that one of the problems is that it’s not worth asking for elections. Alternatives must be presented. One of the great problems of the Portuguese government is its extreme fatigue, its lack of response,” he said.
Catarina Martins claimed that only the President of the Republic has the power to dissolve the Republic’s Assembly.
“We have an absolute majority government. An absolute majority is like that, and anyone who didn’t remember the absolute majority of the PS, I think now, in the worst way, already knows well what an absolute majority of the PS is. It is true that the prime minister’s permanent lack of responsibility when things go wrong is incomprehensible,” he stressed.
The BE coordinator said she heard António Costa say today “that an appearance on TAP was really unacceptable”.
“I ask: And then a million that a former administrator received from his pension who already earned 420 thousand euros in annual salary. Wasn’t that unacceptable? And it happened. Does António Costa have anything to say about that? He has nothing to say about the permanent instrumentalization of public companies or the fact that the PS thinks that as a party apparatus it is confused with the State and public companies and can issue orders and manipulate companies in its interest instead of being in the public interest?”
For the BE leader it is “good” that her party has proposed the committee of inquiry to TAP.
“I think if anyone had any doubts about the need to clarify everything that was going on at TAP, they know today that it was important for BE to take that step so that we know what is happening. We may not like the news, but it was worse if we continued without knowing what was going on at TAP,” he stressed.
Catarina Martins defended that “the whole truth must be clarified and all responsibilities investigated”.
The blockista leader believed that there are other questions in the air, namely how is the government’s relationship in other companies, with other directors and how is this system of privileges.
Asked about submitting a possible motion of censure to the government, the BE coordinator said there is no point at the moment.
“At the moment we think it makes no sense. When the time comes, it will be over,” he assured.
During the visit, the bloquista leader heard some residents’ concerns and explained the current situation in the Castelo neighborhood.
