PS believes that Lula has tried to encourage “the search for peace”.

The PS opined this Sunday that the president of Brazil, like the French head of state, has tried to encourage “the search for peace” in Ukraine, stressing that he had not heard the PSD ask for Emmanuel Macron to be demarcated.

Speaking to Lusa, Jamila Madeira, Vice-President of the PS Bank, said that “the position of Portugal, the government and the PS was absolutely clear from the first minute”, in solidarity with Ukraine and with the “defense of the international law and condemnation of the invading state”, Russia.

Hours earlier, the PSD’s first vice-president, Paulo Rangel, had urged the government to “take a public and formal position”, detracting from the Brazilian president’s statements that the European Union, NATO and the United States of America war in Ukraine.

“What we see – as we have been promoting in recent days by President Macron and now also promoted by President Lula – is a legitimate concern of Portugal, of the Portuguese, of the citizens of the world, namely the search for peace,” the socialist deputy countered .

For Jamila Madeira, “without prejudice to strongly condemning the moment of violation of international law of provocation of this war by Russia”, it is necessary “to try as much as possible that, in the world context, the premise of peace becomes resume”.

“I do not think there is any doubt on this matter and, with regard to the diplomacy that each state promotes, all actions that may be aimed at peace are monitored by us through the usual tools. Just as we saw President Macron – and I don’t think the PSD will come and say we should separate from it – I also believe that these are the motivations, well articulated at different times, of what President Lula is promoting,” he affirmed.

Asked about the position of IL President Rui Rocha, who defended this Sunday that the Assembly of the Republic “cannot receive a Putin ally like Lula on April 25”, the socialist group’s vice president answered indirectly.

“I do not see any change in our relations, nor any change in the Portuguese position on this issue,” he said.

Lula da Silva will be received and will speak at the Assembly of the Republic on April 25, scheduled at 10 a.m., an hour and a half before the traditional solemn session marking the anniversary of the Carnation Revolution.

The socialist deputy admitted that there are different positions than Portugal’s on the war in Ukraine, even within the framework of the Community of Lusophone Countries (CPLP) countries, but emphasized the “increasingly strong relations between Portugal and Brazil”. , both at the level of states and peoples.

Regarding possible criticism of the position of the European Union in this war, Jamila Madeira defended that the EU has sought to “create conditions of support for citizens and conditions of resistance so that the war that is taking place” in Ukraine “can end as soon as possible .”.

Speaking to journalists on Saturday, Brazil’s president, at the end of a visit to China, defended that the US should “stop encouraging war” in Ukraine and that the European Union should “start talking about peace”.
