CDS-PP defends cancellation of ceremony with Lula da Silva in AR

On Monday, the leader of the CDS-PP condemned Brazil’s president’s statements about the war in Ukraine and defended the cancellation of the April 25 welcome session for Lula da Silva.

“The idea of freedom, as framed by the CDS, is incompatible with the position of President Lula da Silva. At this point, President Lula da Silva would be the worst representative of what is desired in celebrating April 25,” , said Nuno Melo.

Speaking to the Lusa bureau at the end of a meeting with the government on the date of the next European elections, the chairman of the CDS-PP defended that “President Lula’s visit to parliament is canceled to participate making these celebrations”.

“What we condemn is the association of President Lula da Silva with the celebration of April 25, when he joins dictatorships and attacks the United States and the European Union, since April 25 celebrates freedom and symbolizes the opposite idea of any dictatorship “stressed the MEP.

Nuno Melo stated that Lula’s statements “go against the grain and dangerously drift” and opined that “Brazil is not what Lula da Silva showed”.

“Brazil is a friendly and fraternal country, which is why it is very tragic to see Lula da Silva join dictatorships and stand against the United States of America and the European Union”he added.

The chairman of the CDS-PP stressed that “it is very important that President Lula da Silva realizes that, contrary to what he says, those who encourage war are those who make it, violate international borders, violate international law, a war of conquest with almost medieval violence, which destroys cities and victimizes men, women and children”.

The leader of the CDS-PP also criticized the PS’s statements on the subject, deeming them “totally inadequate and inappropriate”.

“Every Democrat should condemn President Lula da Silva’s statements, starting with the PS, because it is the ruling party.he defended, pointing out “when freedom and democracy are at stake, statements should not be ambiguous”.

Nuno Melo also said that he “sees with concern the tendency installed in the most radicalized movements of the extreme left and extreme right towards a narrative that justifies Russia in what has to do with the war”, as this is “happening on the national and European level”.

The MEP stressed that “the CDS fights for democracies and does not have two speeches”.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, at the end of a visit to the People’s Republic of China on Saturday, defended that the United States should stop “encouraging war” in Ukraine and that the European Union should “start talking about peace”.

“The United States must stop encouraging war and start talking about peace, the European Union must start talking about peace”the Brazilian head of state told journalists in Beijing before leaving for the United Arab Emirates.

On April 25, the Assembly of the Republic will hold a welcome session for Lula da Silva at 10 a.m., with a speech by the Brazilian President, followed at 11:30 a.m. by the solemn session to mark the 49th. 1st anniversary of the 1974 revolution in Portugal.
