Against the PSD and now against the PS. There are 30 years between these protests

The moment – and the photo – went down in history: in April 1993, fighting against rising tuition fees, four higher education students decided to take their pants off in the presence of the then Minister of Education, Couto dos Santos.

The buttocks read: “I do not pay”. The protest took place at the National Congress of Higher Education.

Apart from the media moment, nothing else happened to these students.

This Monday, 30 years later, not four, but three young people decided to use the same method of protest. On the occasion, the 50th anniversary of the founding of the PS, which took place on this date, in Germany.

The young people waited for the party’s secretary-general (and prime minister), António Costa, to open an exhibition entitled “The posters of the Socialist Party: a story for the future”, and the launch of an official stamp referring to the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of this party. And even if the coordinator of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the PS, José Manuel dos Santos, concluded his speech. Only later did they start shouting slogans for climate action.

“Celebrating what? There is no planet B,” they said, at a time when they also pulled down their pants.

According to Lusa, the youths were taken from the PS national headquarters by PSP security elements and then identified.

In total, the four young people who stood up to scream were identified – although only three of them took their pants off. There was even a fifth element filming the action.

As the cause changed, so did the use of a social networking capture and transmission medium. Another sign of the times, of course.
