Air traffic was temporarily suspended at Bremen airport on Sunday night due to a drone flight of unknown origin, German police told AFP. The device was detected “in the vicinity of the airport around 7:30 p.m.” (18:30 GMT), according to a police spokesman in the northern German Hanseatic city.
As a result, air traffic control, in agreement with federal police, immediately suspended takeoff and landing operations. Traffic resumed almost an hour later. Bremen Airport could not immediately be contacted to provide updates on disrupted or diverted flights. Police say it is unclear who was piloting the drone.
Drone flights near Munich and Berlin airports
Flights were suspended for almost two hours at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport on Friday night due to the presence of drones. At the beginning of October, Munich airport, the second in Germany, had already had to interrupt its operations for several hours for the same reason.
German authorities have repeatedly warned of the growing threat posed by drones, following a series of incursions by unidentified aircraft into airports and military sites this year. Berlin, one of Ukraine’s main supporters against Russia, suspects Moscow is behind some of these activities.
In recent months, several drone flights have been reported over military bases, industrial sites and critical infrastructure, both in Germany and in other European Union countries such as Norway and, in recent days, Belgium.
