The PS announced this Thursday that it will proceed with the confirmation of the decree decriminalizing medically assisted death, which the President of the Republic vetoed on Wednesday, forcing its promulgation.
“The PS group will proceed to the confirmation of the diploma,” declared the leader of the Socialist Group, Eurico Brilhante Diasto journalists in parliament, with the socialist deputy Isabel Moreira at her side.
In a first reaction to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s veto on Wednesday, Isabel Moreira had already hinted that confirmation of the decree would be the option of the PS, without expressly stating so. “Now is the time to respect the parliamentary majority and parliament,” the Socialist deputy reiterated.
This PS decision was announced at the end of the weekly meeting of the Socialist Bank.
According to the constitution, the Assembly of the Republic, despite having a right of veto, can confirm the vote by an absolute majority of the deputies in office, 116 out of 230, and in this case the President of the Republic shall confirm the diploma within eight days of receipt .
On Wednesday afternoon, the head of state dismissed doubts about the constitutionality of the parliamentary decree to decriminalize medically assisted death, stating that he had vetoed it due to “a problem of precision” and opining that if confirmed “there is no drama” .
