Cavaco Silva: “Is there any reason to stop being concerned” about the government?

Former President of the Republic Aníbal Cavaco Silva said on Thursday that there is no reason “to stop being concerned” about the government’s performance.

At the end of the conference “Five Decades of Democracy: What Has Changed?”, which took place at the Carmo Quartel in Lisbon, the former head of state and former prime minister was asked if he had expressed concern over the past few weeks about the current socialist government.

“Is there a reason not to worry?”answered alone.

Speaking to the Lusa bureau and CNN Portugal, Aníbal Cavaco Silva declined to speak on other topics, indicating that he attended this “academic conference” to “listen to two North American political science professors.”

“For a very special reason I am familiar with some of Sheri Berman’s work on social democracy. She is the political science researcher in the United States who has written most on social democracy in Europe”he said.

And he said that was the reason that led him to this Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation initiative.

“I will not comment. What should be emphasized here is what the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation decided to do, organize this initiative and publish that book with a very thick book about what is essential in Portuguese politics”said Cavaco Silva.

At this conference, where researchers Daniel Ziblatt and Sheri Berman debated threats to democracy, the book “O Essencial da Política Portuguesa” was presented.

Last week, on the sidelines of the presentation of a book by PSD parliamentary leader and university professor Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, Cavaco Silva opined that the political situation, which he labeled “very dangerous” two months ago, has since become “very dangerous” deteriorated. more than I expected”, without, however, wanting to go into the details of what he was referring to.
