Costa wants to revive Luso-Brazilian relations with a “technological leap” in the economy

The Portuguese government believes that the 13th Luso-Brazilian summit, to be held in Lisbon on Saturday, will serve to revitalize bilateral political and social relations and increase the technological component in trade between the two countries.

Brazil’s President Lula da Silva arrived in Lisbon this Friday for a state visit to Portugal that ends Tuesday, and on Saturday he will lead the Brazilian executive’s delegation to the Luso-Brazilian summit, which no longer held seven years ago. .

On the part of the Portuguese Government, in addition to the Prime Minister, António Costa, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, of Defense, Helena Careiras, Deputy for Parliamentary Affairs, Ana Catarina Mendes, of Culture, Pedro Adão and Silva , for Science, Technology and Higher Education, Elvira Fortunato, as well as the Secretaries of State for Economy and Health Promotion.

The summit’s motto is “a partnership for the future” and the Portuguese government hopes it will focus on “strengthening partnerships with high added value and high technological integration”.

The Lisbon government is not quantifying exactly how many agreements will be signed on Saturday, but it already considers some bilateral commitments closed, starting with an agreement on witness protection.

From the series of agreements already concluded, the Lisbon Executive highlights a memorandum between the Portuguese Space Agency and the Brazilian Space Agency aimed at cooperation in various areas of space technologies and services.

This commitment, according to the Portuguese government, covers “the observatory areas for the management and surveillance of the territory, land and sea, in terms of sustainability, as well as cooperation on infrastructure technologies for orbital and suborbital launch systems”.

Another bilateral commitment that will be signed concerns cooperation in the biomedical field.

“The signing of this memorandum strengthens bilateral cooperation in the field of health and biomedical research, between institutions and researchers from both countries, with a view to jointly developing innovative products and services to improve the health of Portuguese and Brazilians .” refers in a document accessed by the agency Lusa.

The two governments will also sign memorandums of understanding on support for people with disabilities and on film production.

Also according to a national diplomatic source, at the end of the summit, before the joint conference of António Costa and Lula da Silva, an agreement on the establishment of the Portuguese School of São Paulo – Portuguese Language Center will also be signed.

In the margins of the summit, a business agreement will be signed on Monday for the development of the Embraer A-29N Super Tucano in Portugal, alongside memoranda of understanding between AICEP and APEX to strengthen the bilateral economic and business relationship, and between Turismo de Portugal and Embratur.

According to the Lisbon executive are yet to be signed, there are two bilateral agreements in the field of energy.

“At this summit, we want to diversify and boost our commercial exchanges. Our exports were mainly in agri-food and our imports were mainly mineral fuels. of aviation, molds and equipment,” a source from the national executive told the Lusa- desk.

The Portuguese government also expects progress in the field of energy, noting that EDP has produced the first molecule of green hydrogen through its Ceará facility.

“Defense is also an area where bilateral cooperation can be strengthened,” the same source added, referring to Embraer’s KC 130 military transport aircraft and the Embraer A-29N Super Tucano development project.

With regard to mobility, the Portuguese government points out that since March 10, a simplified model of residence permit has been in place in Portugal for citizens of the Community of Lusophone Countries (CPLP).

Since then, according to national data, residence permits have been issued to 91,259 Brazilian citizens, and about 10,000 others have filed.

At the previous Luso-Brazilian summit, in 2016, between the Prime Minister, António Costa, and the then President of Brazil, Michel Temer, “five bilateral agreements were signed in the fields of electric mobility, literature and science, and cooperation for development.
