“The country will remain free”: the Festival of Independence of Ukraine held between hopes and resilience

This Sunday, August 24, Ukraine celebrates 34 years of its independence while the fight against Russia continues. Therefore, the moment is not totally for the celebration, even if the hope of a positive result for the conflict remains.

In Ukraine, the moment is for the country’s independence celebrations this Sunday, August 24. An event that takes place in a context in which the fight is still against Russia that now controls a fifth of the Ukrainian territory.

Even if negotiations for lasting peace seem more and more complicated, the Ukrainian people want to maintain hope.

“The Ukrainians will continue to fight”

When celebrating the independence of the country, the stigma left by the fight is visible. In the streets of Vinnytsia, Sacha, a former sniper of the Volodymyr Zelensky Army, now travels in a wheelchair after receiving a bullet on the neck.

“Today I feel nothing under the torso. But the most important thing is that I still have my hands and my head,” said the former BFMTV soldier. Despite his physical condition and the situation in the front, Sacha decided to stay in his country.

“The Ukrainians will continue to fight until the end, we will not give up and Ukraine will remain free,” he said.

“It is the duty of our generation”

For this weekend celebration, Sacha and his partner decided to find friends to remember certain memories, even if the war is never far away. “It is with me, in the Kherson region, which has been under Russian occupation since the beginning of the war,” said Sacha’s partner, showing family photos.

“I know it will be painful and difficult, but my greatest wish today is our victory,” he adds.

Present with the couple to celebrate the independence of Ukraine, Anton has taken advantage of his first permission for 8 months, even if he ensures that he has a mission to carry out. “We are fighting for our independence, it is the duty of our generation. We must do it for our ancestors,” he told BFMTV.

To obtain peace, Ukraine can count on some of his supporters, such as Canada. Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in kyiv on Sunday to celebrate the Ukrainian Independence Festival, while world leaders exerted pressure on the war between Ukraine and Russia.
