The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on Wednesday welcomed the abolition of the death penalty in Equatorial Guinea, one of the countries of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), as he noted in a note published on the website. of the presidency.

“Following the amendment of the Criminal Code of Equatorial Guinea, which abolished the death penalty, the President of the Republic welcomes the end of a long period of deepening the Community’s values, which began at the Dili Summit in 2014 ”, says Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

Equatorial Guinean vice president Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue announced on his page on the social network Facebook on Monday that “Equatorial Guinea has abolished the death penalty”, and considers this a “historic” step for the country. .

The measure – released about two months before local, legislative and presidential elections – had been demanded internally and externally for several years and was promised “soon” by the Equatorial Guinean head of state in early March.

The commitment to abolish the death penalty was part of the roadmap that Equatorial Guinea, whose regime has been accused by international organizations of violating human rights, after joining the CPLP in 2014.
