The president of the CDS, Nuno Melo, this Saturday defended the dissolution of parliament by the president of the republic, believing that the actions of the government “put at stake the normal functioning of democratic institutions”.
“In December, the CDS already presented this decision to the president. We said that the administration had reached a cycle that no longer allowed normal regeneration, that the country was once again in a quagmire, that time was only a deterioration of the general situation possible. (which was already seen) and time has proved us right. The country is worse and things are following each other. All the more reason, the dissolution of parliament that we asked for in December makes sense today ” mention.
Speaking to journalists at the Ovibeja agricultural fair, Nuno Melo underlined that the executive administration led by the prime minister “is at the end of its cycle” and that the PS has “lost its capacity to recover” in the face of successive controversies. .
“An absolute majority must be the last of the criteria or reasons not to dissolve parliament. If an absolute majority allows a succession of episodes so sad and regrettable that they question the health of the regime, that implies an intervention.” of the nation’s highest magistrate,” he added.
For Nuno Melo, the recent case involving Infrastructure Minister João Galamba and ex-Deputy Frederico Pinheiro related to TAP and the allegations – already categorically denied by the government official – of trying to omit information from the Commission of Inquiry ” unspeakable, but revealing”, and should have already led to the resignation of the minister.
“It is simply unspeakable to us, but revealing, that the Ministry of Infrastructure can manipulate responses to parliamentary hearings, conceal information requested by a sovereign body, even lend itself to battling scenes in offices and, on the same day, the holder of the portfolio does not present the respective dismissal”he said.
And he continued: “Since it is unbelievable that Minister João Galamba would ask for his resignation, nor that the Prime Minister would demand it as would be supposed in a minimally sound democratic regime, the CDS appeals to the President of the Republic , so that he himself demands that decision from the government. For what is actually at stake at the moment is the regular functioning of the democratic institutions”.
Nuno Melo also questioned the alleged use of the Security Information Service (SIS) to recover the computer that Frederico Pinheiro allegedly took from the Ministry of Infrastructure.
“Having a secret police that can be requested by a Minister in charge of Infrastructure because of a computer can only scare us… Because of the wrong procedure, which I think is illegal, but because of what could be hidden”said the center leader, defending that the government “turned its back on the country” and that the cases “show the low stature of the holders and the sense of state in the decisions”.
The position comes a day after learning of the resignation of João Galamba’s deputy, Frederico Pinheiro, for “conduct incompatible with duties and responsibilities”, and his accusations against the Minister of Infrastructure, already categorically denied by the government official , who had tried to omit information to TAP’s investigative committee.
Also on Friday, several Portuguese media reported that Frederico Pinheiro reacted violently after this dismissal and attacked members of the Ministry of Infrastructure.
Meanwhile, a letter from the Ministry of Infrastructure reached the editors calling for a press conference this Saturday with Minister João Galamba.
