The Secretary General of the PCP reaffirmed this Saturday the need for the government to provide answers to the problems of the Portuguese and the country, rather than focusing on “tricks and maneuvers”, in an initiative promoted by the Portuguese communist youth, in Setúbal.
“The government has executive power, it has an absolute majority, apparently it has a lot of money, it has all the power, it has all the conditions to solve people’s problems, to raise salaries, to raise pensions, to solve the problem of access to the National Health Service, solve the dramatic housing problem — just two days ago, we were confronted with the new interest rate hike and what it means in the lives of each of us,” said Paulo Raimundo.
“And that’s what needs to be fixed. If we were to waste a tenth of our time doing other things to solve this, most of the problems would have already been solved,” he added.
The communist leader, speaking to journalists after presiding over the joint conclusion of the 15th National Assembly of Secondary Education and the 17th National Conference on Higher Education of the Portuguese Communist Youth (JCP) in Setúbal, cited as an example the need for the government to respond to the problems of youth.
“Especially among the youth, it is the solution to the problems of salaries, insecurity, lack of conditions in schools, lack of teachers, lack of non-teaching staff, schools where it rains, very high tuition fees, people leaving higher education because of lack of financial conditions. This is what needs to be solved,” he stressed.
Questioned by journalists, Paulo Raimundo admitted that his statements are a “message to the government” and to those who fuel the alleged “tricks and maneuvers” that have prevented the resolution of the country’s real problems, confirming what he said shortly before at the end of the two JCP meetings had said.
When we need to respond to the problems we face every day […], and when all the conditions are in place to move forward with responses and measures, we have seen in the public debate a constant distraction from these issues and, more seriously, a relentless lack of will to respond to them. It’s a matter of saying: stop chattering and try to solve the country’s problems, which are our daily problems,” Paulo Raimundo said in the address to the young communists.
Regarding the eventual dissolution of parliament, Paulo Raimundo made it clear that the PCP is not in favor of holding new elections. increase in pensions.
“The government is not solving [os problemas], but has all the conditions to solve. And, frankly, the government has already conceded. Granted to pensions. Raising pensions was a drama, it blew up Social Security, but the government gave in, in a limited way, very controlled, but it gave in to the people’s struggle,” he said.
“As for raising civil servants’ salaries, it was also not possible because it would blow everything up. And the government conceded. The increase is still insufficient, it is necessary to raise civil servants’ salaries more, but the government conceded emphasized the communist leader, convinced that it is still possible to force the current PS government to provide the necessary answers to solve the main problems of the Portuguese and the country.
