In accordance with the approval of the Decree on Medically Assisted Death by the Assembly of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa says he has sworn to the Constitution and will therefore abide by it.
“The President of the Republic has 8 days to promulgate the law. The promulgation is mandatory and I will promulgate it within 8 days”he started by saying.
“I have sworn that the Constitution and the Constitution oblige the President of the Republic to enact the law which he has vetoed and which has been confirmed by the Assembly of the Republic. I must apply the Constitution. The Assembly of the Republic affirms it, the President of the Republic promulgates it. This is what I must do, this is what I will do. When I swore the Constitution, I swore the entire Constitution, not just a few articles”he added.
Marcelo says the requests for successive inspections by the PSD “have nothing to do with the proclamation of the President of the Republic” and emphasizes that it remains to be seen when the law will come into effect.
On the sidelines of an event in Estarreja, the head of state declined to comment on the latest incidents in the parliamentary committee of inquiry into TAP. “I will not comment on what is going on in parliament. All I am saying is interference in the life of parliament,” he stressed.
The parliament this Friday confirmed the decree on death with medical assistance, vetoed by the president of the republic, by a total of 129 votes in favour, 81 against and one abstention, promulgating it.
The vast majority of deputies from the PS, IL, BE and representatives from PAN and Livre, as well as eight PSD parliamentarians, voted in favour.
The vast majority of the PSD bank, the Chega and PCP factions, as well as four PS deputies were against the diploma.
The decree also had an abstention by a PSD deputy.
In total, according to the framework of the services of the Assembly, 211 delegates were present in the plenary session.
