The President of the Government of Madeira and leader of the regional PSD structure, Miguel Albuquerque, this Monday expressed his support for a possible agreement with the Liberal Initiative (IL) at the national level, but stressed that it will not happen in the autonomous region.
“At the moment, the Liberal Initiative has no parliamentary representation in Madeira. It has very limited expression. Therefore, at this point we understand that we need to define our agreements – it is a pre-election agreement – with the CDS,” he stated.
Miguel Albuquerque spoke on the sidelines of a visit to a new commercial space in Funchal, where he commented on the statements made by the IL leader, Rui Rocha, at the party’s National Council, which took place on Sunday in Coimbra .
Rui Rocha reiterated that the country has an exhausted government solution and that the party is committed to an alternative that could involve a post-electoral coalition with the PSD.
“I think there has to be a dialogue, I think they are forces that share a set of non-socialist values and in that sense I think it’s important to maintain bridges of dialogue and a possible post-election agreement,” said Miguel Albuquerque, who he stressed that “there is no problem in that regard”.
However, the island leader stressed that in the autonomous region, the only agreement is with the CDS-PP, a party that supports the regional government in coalition with the PSD since 2019, when Madeira’s social democrats lost their absolute majority for the first time. with whom they have governed the region since 1976.
“Here, in Madeira, we [PSD] we have an agreement that will be ratified next Saturday, in the Regional Council, and our idea is to go to the elections with the CDS,” he said.
In addition, he added, the PSD wants to have a stable majority in Madeira.
“Our idea is also to win the elections [legislativas regionais, que se realizam este ano]we have a stable majority so that we can continue to govern in accordance with what Madeirans want, namely economic progress, employability and social peace.”
