This Tuesday, the President of the Republic promulgated the decree of the Assembly of the Republic on euthanasia, the presidency’s official website indicates.
The law was passed without any further statement on the matter, as Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa announced earlier this Tuesday afternoon.
The decree, vetoed by the head of state on April 29, was confirmed on Friday and went to the Belém Palace for promulgation that same day.
It had 129 votes in favour, from the majority of the PSD deputies, from the Liberal Initiative and Left Bloc banks and from the few PAN and Livre deputies, 81 votes against, from the majority of the PSD deputies and the Enough – and PCP banks, and there was a Social Democratic delegate who abstained.
“Of course, thanks as I am for the promulgation, I will promulgate between today and tomorrow [quarta-feira] and I will immediately send it to parliament,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa told journalists at the end of this Tuesday morning in the former royal arena, next to the Belém Palace, in Lisbon.
According to the terms of the Constitution, in the event of a veto of a decree, “if the Assembly of the Republic confirms the vote with an absolute majority of the deputies in office, the President of the Republic must promulgate the diploma within eight days of its receipt.”.
