The deputy secretary general of the PS, João Torres, said on Sunday that statements by former president of the republic Cavaco Silva – who yesterday delivered a highly critical speech of the government and even suggested that António Costa resign – show that he “lost his sense of status” and that he is “unsatisfied” with his “great unpopularity” in the country.
“The aggressiveness and verbal abuse witnessed yesterday by a former Prime Minister and former President of the Republic in the country demonstrate that Professor Cavaco Silva has lost the sense of state that is demanded”said João Torres in statements to journalists on the sidelines of the Gala celebrating the 50th anniversary of PS/Braga, at Theatro Circo.
And continued: “That aggressiveness and the verbal abuse that Professor Cavaco Silva used also shows that he is somehow unhappy about being very unpopular in our country.”
For the Socialist leader, the Social Democrat’s presidential mandate is “a mandate to which no Portuguese has a particularly good memory and it seems that Professor Cavaco Silva is ill-determined with his past”.
In the closing speech of the 3rd National Assembly of Social Democratic Mayors (ASD) in Lisbon on Saturday, Cavaco accused the socialist government of being a specialist in “lies and propaganda”. “It is necessary to save the political debate, because it is important in democracy. According to what we see, hear and read, there are two areas in which the socialist government specializes: in lies and in propaganda and tricks,” he stressed . the former president of the republic. .
Given that the Prime Minister, António Costa, has “lost his authority”, the former head of state said that sometimes heads of government “decided to resign” because of “a strike of conscience”.
“In principle, the current legislature ends in 2026. But sometimes, due to reflection on the situation in the country or a revival of conscience, prime ministers decide to resign and early elections are held – that is what happened in March happened. 2011″, mention.
Cavaco Silva defended that “the PSD is unequivocally the only real, credible alternative to socialist power” and believed that PSD leader Luís Montenegro is “as prepared or better prepared” than when he was head of government.
The former president of the republic (between 2006 and 2016) also believed that the PSD “should not follow censure motions filed by other parties more concerned about being news in the media” – in a reference to Chega and the Liberal Initiative, which has already submitted motions of censure to the Socialist executive in the current legislature, both of which have been rejected in parliament.
On November 26, 2015, António Costa was sworn in as Prime Minister by the then President of the Republic, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, who began to lead the XXI Constitutional Government.
Only 27 days after the previous inauguration – by the PSD/CDS-PP executive led by Pedro Passos Coelho, who was overthrown in parliament on November 10, 2015 – the PS minority manager was sworn in.
