The president of the republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, warned this Friday in Viana do Castelo that “when power takes flight in relation to the people, it is not the people that changes, but the power that changes”.
“It’s very simple. It’s easier to change settings than settings to change people. It’s that simple”warned the head of state in Viana do Castelo, at a time marked by successive controversies in the government and with the scenario of dissolution of the Assembly of the Republic in the speech of the opposition and the president himself.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, speaking in Viana do Castelo, during the celebration of the second anniversary of the Associação Empresarial do Minho (AEminho), added that “either the institutions realize that they have to change, or the reality changes, no matter what the institutions think that needs to change”.
“That’s the problem,” he stressed.
“The world has changed and either the institutions realize they have to change and adapt to reality, they return to reality, or reality continues and the institutions pass”insisted.
The President of the Republic responded to the calls of the Presidents of the Associação Empresarial do Minho (AEMinho), Ricardo Costa, and of the CIP — Confederação Empresarial de Portugal, Armindo Monteiro, regarding “the lack of political credibility and the lack of confidence in the democracy of the institutions” that affects those who want to invest in the country.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa praised the “decisive role” of entrepreneurs, companies and workers in the changes the country has experienced in nearly 900 years of history and asked the entrepreneurs who filled Fort Santiago da Barra, in Viana do Castelo, to make an effort to make “as much progress as possible” during this period.
“That the institutions that have to change realize that they have to change. It also makes little sense if we put in a lot of effort and the institutions continue to resist.he said.
The president of the republic said that the “Portuguese people are exceptional” and that “they will always win in the bets of the future”.
“Always. It would be better if victory came sooner rather than later. It is in your hands, in the hands of those who can have momentum and play a fundamental role in forcing so many institutions to change. It is in your hands to change the state itself, the government itself, regional powers and local powers with your power to be a better country”he added.
“The Portuguese deserve a better country. We reach 900 years with a much better country than the one we have now in the 1920s. I don’t know if I’m here to see it, but if I’m not, I can imagine the joy of young people (…) It means that the efforts we are making at the moment will have been worth it”strengthens.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he was “optimistic and realistic” and believed there was no reason to be “prophets of doom” regarding Portugal’s fate.
“It’s good that we’re fighting about what’s not right. It’s good to goad what needs to be goaded, but with the firm and sure mind that we’re going to win. We mix, but better prepared and organised. But we will win”he said during a speech that lasted almost 378 minutes.
Prior to the commemoration session of AEMinho’s second birthday, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was present at the inauguration of a sculpture in Alameda João Alves Cerqueira, in Viana do Castelo, just like the one inaugurated today in Braga, which is the link between the two symbolizes districts and the 24 councils that make them up.
After the ceremony, the president of the republic walked to Fort Santiago da Barra, where a dozen teachers were waiting for him, asking him for “stability” and that he would “solve the fundamental problems of his career.”
In a response, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that he has not yet received the seniority diploma.
