The parliamentary leader of the PS highlighted this Wednesday the data on the evolution of the Portuguese economy, accused the PSD of having failed all predictions and pointed out that Luís Montenegro has already admitted losing the next European elections.
These positions were relayed by Eurico Brilhante Dias, after data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) was released showing that gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 2.5% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year and 1.6% from the previous quarter.
Also according to INE’s quick estimate, the year-on-year rate of change in the consumer price index (CPI) fell to 4.0% in May, 1.7 percentage points lower than in April.
In front of journalists, the chairman of the parliamentary group of the PS defended that “the life of the Portuguese is improving”, signaled the interim increase in civil servant salaries and the interim increase in pensions from July, and claimed that the country had succeeded is to reversing the inflation cycle, emphasizing measures such as zero VAT on a basket of food products considered essential.
In an allusion to the work of the PSD and other political opposition forces, Eurico Brilhante Dias stated that “the Portuguese see the difference between business and business and the concrete government action that comes into their lives”.
“We also had a symptom of it in the political context. Doctor Luís Montenegro has already admitted losing the European elections. He realizes that the life of the Portuguese is improving”advocated the leader of the socialist group, before also referring to the political activities of his social-democratic counterpart, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento.
“Seeing my colleague Joaquim Miranda Sarmento – an economist, professor at the University of Lisbon at ISEG – hold a press conference a while ago where he did not mention the figures of the Portuguese economy ever says everything about the state of our opposition. Leader of the main opposition bank, the economist did not say a word today – as the PPD/PSD leader has not said – about the behavior of the Portuguese economy, about the concrete life of the Portuguese. About unemployment or economic growth, he said zero”he pointed it out.
