The midterm election of the President of the General Assembly of the Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP), motivated by the resignation of Mário Costa, will take place on June 23, the organization announced today in a statement.
“Liga Portugal informs that a General Assembly will be held on June 23, 2023 for the interim election of the President of the Board of the General Assembly for the remaining period of the mandate corresponding to the four-year period 2023-27”, reported the LPFP, adding the requests. They must be submitted before June 19.
The election will take place at the headquarters of the Club League, in Porto, less than a month after the inauguration of the governing bodies for the last term of Pedro Proença as president of the entity, after the resignation of Mário Costa , communicated on Wednesday during an emergency meeting.
At issue is the investigation by the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) of Mário Costa and the soccer academy to which he is linked, in Riba D’Ave, municipality of Famalicão, district of Braga, on suspicion of human trafficking.
The Porto Regional Prosecutor’s Office specified on Wednesday that 33 minors were withdrawn from the soccer academy, and other adults were sent to reception units.
In a note published on its page, that prosecutor’s office indicates that the minors were removed after an articulated intervention by the competent authorities and “because they were in a dangerous situation.”
According to a source from the SEF, 114 soccer players from South America, Africa and Asia were identified and all of them are in an irregular situation in the country.
