Soccer player Quincy Promes sentenced to 18 months in prison for stabbing

A Dutch court sentenced Dutch footballer Quincy Promes to 18 months in prison on Monday for stabbing his cousin at a family celebration.

The Spartak Moscow player, who pleaded not guilty, was not present in court in Amsterdam to hear the verdict, as he currently lives in Russia.

Quincy Promes stabbed his cousin in the leg at the end of a family celebration in 2020 over a stolen necklace, the court concluded.

Normally anyone convicted of this crime would receive a sentence of at least one year, but Promes was given a harsher prison sentence due to his public profile. “The court took into account that the suspect is a professional football player and therefore has an exemplary function,” the court said in a statement. “The court also accuses the suspect of not taking any responsibility for his act.”

The public prosecutor’s office, which demanded two years in prison, dropped the attempted murder charge against Promes last year.

The reason for the investigation was a wiretapping of another investigation into drug trafficking in which the Dutch player was also involved. Quincy Promes was accused in May of importing several hundred kilograms of cocaine through the Belgian port of Antwerp in 2020.

Quincy Promes has 50 international caps, with seven goals and was part of the Dutch national team at Euro 2020, which was played in 2021 due to the covid-19 pandemic. He has not worn the national team jersey since then.

In 2019 he transferred from Seville to Ajax for fifteen million euros, before returning to Spartak in 2021.
