Victor Wembanyama was the expected first pick of the NBA draft

French center Victor Wembanyama was the first pick of the North American Basketball League (NBA) draft by the San Antonio Spurs, with the player citing a dream come true.

Victor Wembanyama, 19 years old and 2.21 meters tall, was named the undisputed pick in the first position of the draft, which took place at Brooklin on Thursday, and the Spurs, led by veteran Gregg Popovich, narrowed it down to the confirm what has long been announced.

“This is probably the best night of my life. It’s a dream come true, it’s unbelievable”said the player.

Wembanyama played last season for Metropolitans 92, a team in the top division of French basketball, and made his debut for the French national team in November, then aged 18, with 20 points and nine rebounds in just over 23 minutes, in a triumph in Lithuania.

Pole started in Nanterre’s formation and later played in ASVEL, before arriving at Metropolitans 92, now bound for the United States.

“I will give 100% and do everything in my power to help win this franchise. I want to make an impact on the fans and the community. I want to learn how to get closer and closer to the title and the path to reach it can come. “he stressed.

This was the Spurs’ third time winning the draft lottery, having selected David Robinson in 1987 and Tim Duncan in 1997, key members of the dynasty that won five NBA titles, on the previous two occasions.

The draft brought no surprises in the top picks, with winger Brandon Miller being selected in second place by the Charlotte Hornets, while base Scoot Henderson was the third pick, owned by the Portland Trail Blazers.
