Madeira athlete died while competing in Ultra da Madeira

A Madeiran athlete, about 70 years old, died this Saturday during the 6th edition of Ultra Madeira, in the municipality of Machico, said a source of the firefighters and the athletics association of the region.

According to a source of the Machico firefighters, the incident took place in the Lamaceiros area, Ribeira de Machico, and 12 members of the company were sent to the scene and the Rapid Intervention Medical Team (EMIR) was called.

“When they arrived at the scene, the man was no longer showing any vital signs,” the same source said.

The rescue operation had the cooperation of the forest police and “all-terrain vehicles were needed to reach the site due to the wetland”.

The management of the Athletics Association of the Autonomous Region of Madeira has already issued a statement stating that “During the Ultra Madeira event, in the 30-kilometer race, an athlete suddenly became ill and died, despite the efforts of the fire service and civil defense.”

Due to this situation, the organization has “decided to cancel the award ceremony and the race scheduled for Sunday, October 2,” the same message reads.

Ultra Madeira is a sporting event that aims to connect one end of the island to the other. The program consists of five events.

This 6th edition had 526 registered athletes.
