Botafogo announces Bruno Lage as new coach

Botafogo this Saturday announced the appointment of Bruno Lage as the new coach of the team that leads the Brazilian championship, succeeding Luís Castro who signed for Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr last week.

The former coach of Benfica and Wolverhampton signed a contract that runs until the end of this year, 2023, and would arrive in Rio de Janeiro early this week.

At the age of 47, Bruno Lage has four seasons as head coach, in which he won a national title and a Super Cup with Benfica.

At Wolverhampton, he spent just over a season, as he was eventually sacked from the Premier League squad after nine games played in the second season.

With Bruno Lage, the number of Portuguese coaches in the Brasileirão rises to seven, including Abel Ferreira (Palmeiras), Pepa (Cruzeiro), Renato Paiva (Bahia), Pedro Caixinha (RB Bragantino), António Oliveira (Cuiabá) and Armando Evangelista (Goias) .

Botafogo alone leads the Brasileirão with 33 points, seven more than the runner-up, Grémio, and in the final game, against Vasco da Gama, they were led by interim Cláudio Caçapa, following the departure of Luís Castro.
