Gilberto leaves Benfica and returns to Brazil to represent Bahia

The footballer Gilberto will return to Brazil to represent Bahía, led by the Portuguese Renato Paiva, after having signed a contract until 2026, after three seasons at Benfica, the two clubs announced this Sunday in a statement.

“Sport Lisboa e Benfica informs that it has reached an agreement for the definitive transfer of Gilberto to Bahia (Brazil)”, announced the Portuguese national champion, on the official website, in addition to posting a video thanking the player on the networks social.

For his part, the current 16th place in the Brazilian championship revealed that the ‘canarinho’ right-back, who had a contract with the ‘águilas’ until June 2025, signed a contract until the end of the 2026 calendar year.

Gilberto arrived at Benfica in the 2020/21 season, with the ‘hand’ of Jorge Jesus, from Fluminense, the club he represented for two and a half years.

Before, the 30-year-old defender played for Vasco and for the transalpine clubs of Latina, Hellas Verona and Fiorentina. Botafogo and Internacional were the first two emblems that Gilberto represented in his career as a senior.

For the ‘incarnated’ he played a total of 106 games and scored eight goals and seven assists, winning the title of national champion last season.
