National Stadium will be restored with the help of the federations

The Municipality of Oeiras, the Portuguese Athletics Federation, the Portuguese Football Federation, the Portuguese Rugby Federation and the Portuguese Institute of Youth and Sports will sign a cooperation protocol tomorrow (11 a.m.) for the promotion and rehabilitation of the Estádio de Honra, commonly known as the National Stadium, of the sports complex of Jamor.

The news was brought to the fore by the DN, who reported two weeks ago that the future may be through temporary concessions to some federations. “The government has been evaluating the issue, namely with the FPF and also with other federations, hoping that soon there will be news about the project for the National Stadium, which will also open it for more effective participation in other sports,” said a source.government to the DN, without specifying when and in what ways this could happen.

Something that will be officially announced today. According to the municipality of Oeiras, “this formalization of the cooperation is reflected in the willingness of the parties to contribute to the rehabilitation and optimization of the National Stadium, as a privileged sports venue”. To this end, a competition of ideas will be organized by the federations concerned with a view to defining the architectural project for the rehabilitation of the National Stadium.

The process of classifying the fence as a national heritage has been challenged, but it will not prevent the use and exploitation concessions, provided that the rehabilitation is carried out in accordance with the rules and supervision of the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, which in 2019 opened the procedure classification.

The subject of Jamor’s classification has always been controversial. For many, the National Stadium is a masterpiece of fascist architecture. Inspired by the old Olympic Stadium in Berlin, the venue was designed in 1933, but the foundation stone was not laid until 1938. of Camões and the Portuguese Communities – by the President of the Republic Óscar Carmona and by the President of the Council (similar to that of Prime Minister) António Oliveira Salazar.

The ceremony, according to DN at the time, was “a great national affirmation of optimism, discipline and beauty”. The party ended with a Benfica-Sporting match, which the Lions won 3-2. Since 1946, with few exceptions, it has hosted the final of the Portuguese Cup and in 1967 it hosted the European Cup final, in which Celtic defeated Inter Milan. It has since become a sacred place for Scottish fans, who make annual pilgrimages.

It was only later that the complex was given the spaces it has today, namely the swimming pool, high-performance center, tennis center, football and rugby fields, residence for athletes, next to the stadium and training center and to serve the population for sports practice.
