The athlete Sandro Baessa won the bronze medal on Monday in the 1,500-meter T20 (intellectual disability) event at the Paralympic World Athletics Championships, which takes place in Paris, ensuring Portugal’s third place in the 2024 Paralympic Games.
At the Charléty stadium in Paris, Sandro Baessa finished with a time of 3.54.04 minutes, behind the British Ben Sandilands (3.52.42) and the American Michael Branningan (3.53.50), gold and silver medals, respectively.
“For me fourth place was already like first place, third is the biggest prize. I opened a quota for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, I am very happy, now it is time to work even harder to achieve more goals like this”, said Sandro Baessa, in statements to the Portuguese Paralympic Committee (CPP).
Also this Monday, the last day of competition, Carolina Duarte will participate in the final of the 400 meters T13 (visually impaired).
Sandro Baessa’s bronze joins those won by Carina Paim in the 400m T20, Miguel Monteiro in the shot put F40 (motor disability).
The three podiums secured the opening of three places for Portugal in athletics for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
The Paralympic Athletics World Championships, a competition in which Portugal is represented by 10 athletes, are the first qualifying event for the Paralympic Games, guaranteeing the opening of non-nominal quotas for the respective country to the first four classified in each event.
