The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, congratulated this Monday night the Portuguese delegation that participated in the World Paralympic Athletics Championships, which took place in Paris and where Portugal collected four medals.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa congratulated, by phone, the president of the Portuguese Paralympic Committee, “on behalf of all the athletes for the way in which they honored the name of Portugal and of all the Portuguese people”, highlights a note published on the website . of the Presidency of the Republic.
“The President of the Republic enthusiastically followed the performance of the Portuguese athletes in the competitions of the World Athletics Championships Paris’2023, which took place at the Charléty Stadium, organized by World Para Athletics”, it can be read.
The Portuguese delegation was made up of 10 athletes, included in a universe of 1,330 athletes from 107 countries in competition, having obtained a silver and three bronze medals, the same note also highlights.
Carolina Duarte won the silver medal in the 400 meters T13, Carina Paim won the bronze medal in the 400 meters T20, Miguel Monteiro won the bronze medal in the shot put F40 and Sandro Baessa won the bronze medal in the 1500 meters T20.
The four podium places also allowed Portugal to secure four non-nominal places at the 2024 Paralympics, which will also take place in Paris.
The Paralympic Athletics World Championships were the first qualifying event for the Paralympic Games, guaranteeing the first four classified in each event the opening of non-nominal quotas for the respective country.
