VAR explanations will be communicated in real time during the Women’s World Cup

The explanations on the decisions of the video referee (VAR) in the Women’s World Cup will be broadcast in real time in the stadiums and on television, to make “the process more transparent,” FIFA announced Tuesday.

The system will be used for the first time in a World Cup for senior teams, after having been tested in the Club World Cup, held in Morocco, and in the U-20 World Cup, which was held in Argentina.

“We want to make the process more transparent and improve understanding of refereeing decisions,” explained Pierluigi Collina, chairman of FIFA’s refereeing committee, adding that the referees present at the competition, which begins on Thursday, “already experienced sound in training”. reasons and everything went well”.

During the matches of the Women’s World Cup, a competition in which the Portuguese team will debut, the referees will be able to consult a screen located next to one of the lines, and then they must explain and communicate the decision to the public, through a microphone placed on the t-shirt.

Some referees have already raised concerns that decisions need to be explained in English, which can put additional pressure on non-English speakers.

In the World Cup, which will be played in New Zealand and Australia between Thursday and August 20, Portugal will compete in Group E and will face runners-up Holland (July 23), Vietnam (July 27) and the champions of the World United States (August 1).
