Portugal’s roller hockey team beat France 3-1 today to secure first place in Group A of the European Championship, setting up a meeting with England in the quarter-finals of the competition in Catalonia.
In the third and final game of the group stage, Portugal scored through Henrique Magalhães (14th and 37th minutes) and João Rodrigues (39th), and in between Carlo di Benedetto (27th) was still tied for the Gauls.
With two wins and a draw, the national team secured first place in Group A, with seven points, ahead of Italy (three), Spain (two) and France (one), even though Italians and Spaniards face each other today , both without the possibility of threatening the Portuguese leadership.
In the quarter-finals, which will take place on Thursday, Portugal will face England, who were fourth and last in Group B, with three losses in the same number of games from 8 p.m. (Lisbon time).
The European roller hockey championship runs until Saturday in Sant Sadurni d’Anoia, in Catalonia.
