Benfica announced today that it has reached an agreement with Dutch side AZ Alkmaar on the transfer, on loan until the end of the 2023/24 season, of footballer Tiago Dantas.
AZ Alkmaar himself confirmed the loan, revealing that an option to buy is planned, the value of which he did not specify, and that Tiago Dantas, who was employed by Portugal under-21 last Euro 2023, will wear the squad number 6 of the Dutch formation.
“Tiago was trained at Benfica, which is known as one of the best training academies in the world. He has shown that he can impress both in youth football and on loan, especially in the last year in Greece. He has quality with the ball and has already gained the necessary experience. All this means that we have high expectations of his arrival,” said director of football Max Huiberts in a statement to the website of AZ Alkmaar.
According to Huiberts, the arrival of Tiago Dantas fits the club’s need to strengthen the midfield after the departure of Tijjani Reijnders, Peer Koopmeiners and Zico Buurmeester.
The Portuguese midfielder started the 2020/21 season in the Reds B-squad after being loaned to the Germans from Bayern Munich, and in the past two seasons has represented Tondela and the Greeks from PAOK Salonica, also on loan from Benfica.
Tiago Dantas progressed through all youth levels at the club until he rose to the B-squad in the 2018-19 season after making his debut for the main team on 21 December 2019 in a League Cup match.
