Portugal’s Diogo Ribeiro qualified this Sunday for the semifinals of the 50m butterfly at the Fukuoka2023 Swimming World Championships, in Japan, finishing sixth in the qualifiers, swimming in 23.14 seconds.
Ribeiro, who is the junior world record holder for the distance with 22.96, was sixth best of the 10 provisional heats, with Frenchman Maxime Grousset, vice-champion of Europe, fastest with 22.74.
Over the same distance, Miguel Nascimento swam in 23.95 seconds, the 42nd best mark, unable to advance to the semifinals, which are scheduled for today at 12:27 in Lisbon.
The two swimmers are already qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, at other distances, as the 50 butterfly is not part of the Olympic program.
In the 100-meter breaststroke, Gabriel Lopes was 400th off the personal best, with 1:01:69 minutes, and fell short of the heats, with the 32nd best time of 70 swimmers, still a long way from the national record, set at 1:01:01 by Carlos Almeida since 2013.
At dawn on Monday, five more Portuguese will be in action: Tamila Holub and Diana Durães in the 1,500-meter freestyle, Camila Rebelo in the 100-meter backstroke, Ana Pinho Rodrigues in the 100-meter breaststroke and João Costas in the 100-meter backstroke.
The World Swimming Championships run until next Sunday, July 30 in Fukuoka, Japan.
