The Association of Judges of Spain (AMJE) has asked the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to apply the protocol for prevention, detection and action against sexual harassment and abuse and to “immediately” remove the president, Luis Rubiales.
The association maintains that this protocol expressly contemplates the rejection of behaviors such as that of Rubiales, who kissed the player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth during the medal ceremony in Sydney, Australia, after winning the Women’s Soccer World Cup.
“The act practiced by Luis Rubiales is clearly a sexist behavior on the body of a woman, carried out without her consent and in a context of unequal power relations that affect the ability of women to react,” the association defended in a statement. .
For lawyers, justifying this type of conduct is whitewashing a clearly sexist situation that violates the principle of equality.
On the other hand, they warn that if the RFEF does not act immediately, not only is it not protecting a player from the Spanish team, but it is sending a message to the whole of society, “justifying and protecting conduct that, unfortunately, is repeated many times without end: the attack on the body of women as if it were an object”.
The AMJE also addressed Jenni Hermoso: “You couldn’t have done anything to prevent the attack you suffered and you don’t have to do anything, because she and her companions have already done everything, they have already made history.”
