Luis Rubiales announces that he will not step down as president of the Spanish football federation

The president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, reiterated on Friday that he will not resign from his position, after several Spanish media outlets reported that he would tender his resignation, following the allegedly non-consensual kiss given to international Jenni Hermoso.

Before the resignation was made official, the leader said the kiss was “spontaneous, mutual and consensual”. “I have a great relationship with all the players and we had some really nice moments of concentration. The moment Jenni showed up I hugged her and told her to forget about the penalty, which made for a fantastic World Cup. I asked: ‘a parakeet?’. And it happened. They are committing a social murder”he claimed.

“Politicians called this action sexual violence, without consent, aggression… these people are trying to kill me in public and I will defend myself like all Spaniards, in court. I will take action against these people”he repeated, speaking of “false feminism” that “does not seek the truth.”

“They told me not to step down and be strong. I’m not going to step down! I’m not going to step down! I’m not going to step down! Is a consenting kiss to get me out of here? I’m going to fight to the end”shot.

Rubiales, who was elected in May 2018, announced the decision at the RFEF’s Extraordinary General Assembly, which took place at the body’s headquarters in Madrid’s football city of Las Rosas.

The controversy was sparked by Sunday’s controversy, which saw Rubiales kiss footballer Jenni Hermoso, allegedly without her consent, shortly after Spain’s women’s side won the World Cup that took place in Australia and New Zealand.

The meeting followed a petition from the regional associations of Spanish football expressing their support for the leader of the RFEF.

Since the incident, Rubiales has been the target of numerous criticisms from the most diverse quarters, from the head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, to various public and political figures, including Jenni Hermoso herself, who initially devalued the economy. situation, but on Wednesday he appealed to the union of Spanish footballers (FUTPRO) to ask for sanctions against Rubiales.

The Professional Women’s Football League (Liga F) has also filed a complaint with the Higher Sports Council, asking for the disqualification of Luis Rubiales for “dirty and embarrassing behaviour”.

Similarly, FIFA this Thursday opened a disciplinary investigation against the president of the RFEF, considering that the acts “may constitute a violation of paragraphs 1 and 2 of Article 13 of the Disciplinary Act” of the body, referring to the fact that the behavior “impairs the dignity or integrity” of a person on account of his or her gender.

Rubiales’ gesture had huge consequences and other images appeared on social networks criticizing the leader, who a few meters earlier, still in the stands at Sydney stadium, grabbed his genitals to celebrate the triumph, a few meters of Queen Letizia and the daughter.
