Belgian cyclist Tijl De Decker, winner of this year’s Paris Roubaix in the under-23 category, died on Friday at the age of 22, two days after an accident during training, his team, Lotto-Dstny, announced.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you about the death of Tijl De Decker, after Wednesday’s training accident,” the team wrote on the social network, formerly Twitter.
De Decker crashed violently into the back of a car during training and was transported to hospital in Lierre (Antwerp) where he underwent surgery, before being transferred to Antwerp University Hospital where he remained in an induced coma.
The Belgian, winner of stages in the Tour of Taiwan and Alsace in July, made his name by beating Paris-Roubaix, in the variant of hope, after signing a professional contract with Lotto-Dstny, with a view to next season.
