Belgian cyclist Tijl De Decker, winner of this year’s Paris Roubaix in the under-23 category, died this Friday at the age of 22, two days after suffering an accident during training, announced his team, Lotto-Dstny.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Tijl De Decker, following the training accident on Wednesday,” the team wrote on the social network, formerly Twitter.
De Decker crashed violently into the back of a car during training and was taken to Lierre hospital (Antwerp) where he underwent surgery, before being transferred to Antwerp University Hospital, where he remained in an induced coma.
Winner of stages in the Tour of Taiwan and in Alsace, in July, the Belgian made himself known by beating Paris-Roubaix, in the variant of hopes, after having signed a professional contract with Lotto-Dstny, facing the next season.
