The coaching staff of the Spanish women’s soccer team, in a group of 11 people and of which coach Jorge Vilda is not a part, presented his resignation this Saturday, in solidarity with the player Jenni Hermoso and other internationals.
The 11 people who signed the statement express “the strongest and strongest condemnation of the conduct shown by the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luís Rubiales, whose version of events does not coincide with his.”
Thus, “in view of the unacceptable attitudes and statements of the top leader” of the RFEF, the signatories, Montse Tomé, Javier Lerga, Eugenio Gonzalo, Blanca Romero, Carlos Sánchez, Rubén Jiménez, Sonia Bermúdez, Javier Velázquez, Javier Egido, Ander Ruiz and Eelena Fernández, leave their respective offices.
The attendees, analysts and coaches also say they fully support the statement from the Spanish internationals, as well as Hermoso’s public statements, adding the “inconvenience” of having been summoned, with obligation, to the RFEF assembly.
“Several members of the coaching staff were forced to sit in the front row, exposing their image and making society and the players understand that they shared the thesis of the RFEF president,” the members of the coaching staff also denounced.
Also today, and in the statement from the women’s coaching team, with the exception of coach Jorge Vilda, was joined by the men’s coach Luís de La Fuente, who on Friday at the AG was with his female counterpart and applauded Rubiales.
“The events carried out by Luís Rubiales do not respect the protocol that must exist in these celebrations and do not dignify, nor are they appropriate for a person who represented all of Spanish football,” the men’s coach said today.
De La Fuente has been harshly criticized on social networks, for now censoring “without palliatives”, as he himself says, the behavior of the already suspended, by FIFA, president of the Federation, when on Friday he gave him a standing ovation.
The statements of the male coach were sent in a statement to the EFE agency, indicating the person in charge that they are also on behalf of his technical team.
“I want this unpleasant episode to end as soon as possible, for the good of Spanish football. That the competent bodies resolve and make the pertinent decisions, as soon as possible,” he said.
The controversy in Spanish football arose last Sunday, during the celebrations of the unprecedented world title of the Spanish women’s team, which defeated England 1-0 in the final, played in Sydney, when, at the time of the awards ceremony Rubiales kissed Hermoso on the mouth, after having grabbed his testicles, as a sign of celebration, in the gallery of honor.
Numerous criticisms of what happened followed, with Hermoso stating that he had not consented to the kiss, after a first version said that everything happened at a time of greater euphoria.
After several days with much criticism from various sectors of society, the RFEF held an Extraordinary General Assembly on Friday, in which the resignation of Rubiales was expected, which did not happen, giving rise to a new peak of conflict and extreme positions, with the players announcing that they are not available to represent the team while the current leaders of the RFEF remain in office.
Already today, FIFA, which had opened a disciplinary investigation, for infractions that could violate the disciplinary code, in terms of dignity and integrity, announced the suspension of the top leader of the Spanish Federation.
“Today we have decided to provisionally suspend Luis Rubiales from all soccer-related activities, nationally and internationally,” the body that manages world soccer announced in a statement, adding that the suspension will have an initial duration of 90 days.
