The situation of the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation can be complicated. The Spanish Public Prosecution Service opened an investigation against Luis Rubiales on Monday, following the controversial kiss he gave player Jenni Hermoso after the final that gave Spain the title of world champion of women’s football.
The Public Prosecution Service opens an investigation into an alleged assault after the player claims that the kiss on the mouth was not consensual.
According to El Mundo, the Public Prosecution Service has invited soccer player Jennifer Hermoso to report the case.
This new development comes on the day when the Spanish Football Federation will meet in an emergency to analyze the temporary suspension of President Luis Rubiales, issued by FIFA on Saturday. A decision that came after Rubiales announced he would not be stepping down, claiming that the kiss on the world champion’s mouth was agreed.
During the celebration of Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup final in Australia, Rubiales kissed Jenni Hermoso on the mouth and later stated that it was consent, which was denied by the athlete.
“I want to make it clear that, as can be seen in the footage, at no point did I consent to the kiss he gave me and, of course, I made no attempt to educate the president in any way. I didn’t say that,” said Hermoso. in a statement from players’ union FutPro, released last Friday.
Contrary to expectations, Rubiales did not present his resignation at the Extraordinary General Assembly of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, after the controversy caused by the gesture he made.
“I’m not going to resign, I’m not going to resign,” he said, accusing members of the government, the press and various personalities of wanting to commit “character assassination” on him, adding that he would blame those who accused him of “sexual violence”.
