Manchester City Norwegian international Erling Haaland has won the Premier League player of the year award from the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) of that country, the organization announced on Tuesday.
In his first season at the service of the ‘citizens’, the 23-year-old striker became the top scorer in the Premier League, with 36 goals in 35 games, contributing to the conquest of the Manchester team’s third championship, which even so won the FA Cup and the Champions League.
Haaland’s scoring record in 2022/23 has seen him emerge as the Premier League’s top scorer in a single season since the competition’s inception in 1992, surpassing Andy Cole and Alan Shearer, who had scored 34 goals for Newcastle and Blackburn Rovers, respectively, in 1993/94 and 1994/95.
In the race for the best player award, the Nordic striker beat his teammates Kevin de Bruyne and John Stones, as well as Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, both from Arsenal, and Harry Kane, former Tottenham striker, meanwhile transferred to Bayern Munich.
For his part, the English international Bukayo Saka was awarded the prize for the best young player of the year, ahead of Haaland, Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal), Jacob Ramsey (Aston Villa), Moisés Caicedo (ex-Brighton and now at Chelsea ) and Evan. Ferguson (Brighton).
The PFA awards included, among others, also the best eleven of the Premier League, which includes the Portuguese international Rúben Dias, from Manchester City.
The team of the year also includes goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal), defenders William Saliba (Arsenal), John Stones (Manchester City) and Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), midfielders Rodri (Manchester City), Kevin de Bruyne (Manchester City) and Martin. Odegaard (Arsenal), and forwards Erling Haaland (Manchester City), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) and Harry Kane (Tottenham).
