Getafe announced this Friday the signing, on loan, of English footballer Mason Greenwood, suspended by Manchester United after accusations of rape, domestic violence and sexual coercion by his ex-girlfriend.
The Spanish club announced the agreement, with the striker seeking to relaunch his career after more than a year and a half of suspension, since January 2022, when he was charged, although the courts had filed the investigations, and after withdrawing the complaints, before the trial scheduled for November 2023.
On 21 August, the Manchester club explained that after completing internal investigations, “it was mutually agreed that the most appropriate course” would be for the player to leave the club.
The striker, whose case of abuse and violence against a woman was highly publicized, arrives in Spain at a time when Spanish football is discussing a “scandal” around the non-consensual kiss of the federation president, Luis Rubiales, to the captain of the world champion team, Jenni Hermoso.
The president of Getafe, Ángel Torres, ruled on the case and declared that the federation leader could not continue “not one more minute” in office, for which he was suspended by FIFA.
Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 after being accused by a woman of rape and assault, with images and video shared on social media, then released on bail in February.
On October 15, the winger was arrested again for allegedly violating the conditions of his bail and, days later, his trial was scheduled for November 2023, but the charges were eventually dropped.
English soccer hope Mason Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United and watched as sponsors like Nike terminated contracts and video game giant EA Sports dropped him from its FIFA2022 squads.
With United, the English international played a total of 129 official matches, scoring 35 goals and 10 assists.
