The Deputy Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Ana Catarina Mendes, called on Monday for effective “gender equality” in sport and stressed the need to “eliminate misogyny and sexist behavior.”
“We know, even from recent cases, that it is not enough to assume gender equality on paper, we have to do more and better and, above all, change mentalities and eliminate the shadows of misogyny and macho behavior. Also for this reason , “We need more women in the direction of our clubs,” said the minister, who also has the Equality portfolio, at the inauguration of the Sporting de Braga multipurpose pavilion.
Ana Catarina Mendes praised the Minho club for its commitment to the women’s team, highlighting its soccer team and recalling that the club will soon advance with a women’s futsal team.
“oh [Sporting de] Braga has done a lot for gender equality,” said the minister, noting that of the approximately 3,000 Sporting Braga athletes, 1,400 are women.
These statements by the Portuguese minister come at a time when the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, is widely criticized around the world for his behavior at the Sydney stadium, on August 20, during and after the women’s World Cup final.
Rubiales kissed the player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth, which the footballer later said was not consented to, contrary to what the president of the federation has stated.
Earlier, on the stadium bench, Rubiales had touched his genitals to celebrate the Spanish victory.
The two conducts earned him complaints from the Spanish government before the Administrative Court of Sport, which decided to open a disciplinary process against Rubiales, and the suspension by FIFA of the position of president of the Spanish federation, for 90 days.
