“I’m going to give Pepe a red card for aggression.” Listen to the first audio of the VAR made public

The Referee Council of the Portuguese Football Federation released this Thursday for the first time the communications between the video referee (VAR) and the referee.

These audios were made public in a SportTV program. The first in the history of Portuguese football is the expulsion of Pepe during the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira between Benfica and FC Porto.

In the 89th minute, the Portuguese international got tangled with Jurásek on the touchline and the Czech fell to the ground complaining. The main referee of the match, Luís Godinho, did not report anything, but was called by the VAR, João Pinheiro, to view the images.

Read the transcript of the first communication between the VAR and the referee made public:

“VAR (João Pinheiro): Godinho, this is the VAR. I advise you to go to the review area to see violent behavior.

Referee (Luís Godinho): Is it Pepe?

(…)

Referee: I already am.

VAR: I have this image and another.

Referee: Ok, violent conduct, no ball, knee on the striker’s back. Violent behavior. “I’m going to give Pepe a red card for aggression.”
